Best Robot Mowers for Slopes and Hilly Gardens

Slope is the spec that rules mowers out fastest. A mower that is fine on a flat lawn can slip, scalp or simply stop on a bank, so start with the number, then check the edges.

Quick Answer

  1. Best for steep slopes on a normal-sized lawn: Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD 1000, rated to 80%.
  2. Steep and up to 2,000 m²: Sunseeker Elite X5 Gen 2, three-wheel drive, 60%.
  3. Large, hilly plots: Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 3000, 80% over 3,000 m².
  4. The steepest rating we found: Segway Navimow X430, 84%.
  5. Moderate slopes on a budget: Segway Navimow i205 AWD, 45% with AWD.

Who This Guide Is For

This guide is for lawns with banks, terraces, or a steady fall from house to fence. If any part of your lawn is steeper than about 45%, every model under £1,000 in our database is out, and you should shortlist from here.

Skip it if your lawn is flat or gently undulating. Almost any mower will cope, and you will get better value from the small gardens or under £1,000 guides.

How We Chose

Manufacturers quote a maximum slope as a percentage. 100% is a 45° bank, and 50% means the ground rises 50 cm for every metre across. We ranked models by:

  • Stated maximum slope, from the brand's UK page. Where a brand quotes degrees and a percentage that do not agree, we say so.
  • Slope at the boundary. Husqvarna and Gardena publish a lower figure for the lawn edge, where a mower turns. Most brands publish only one number.
  • Drive. All-wheel drive keeps grip on damp grass, which matters on a British slope for much of the year.
  • Owner reports of the mower coping, or not, on real hills.

Figures are from the manufacturer's UK page where published, otherwise from the retailer or source linked from the model name, checked 28 October 2026. "Not stated" means we found no published figure. Prices are the brand's UK price unless labelled otherwise, and retailers' prices change often.

Husqvarna's 430V NERA is rated 50% inside the lawn but 25% at the boundary. Brands that publish only one figure do not say whether it applies at the edge.

The Picks

Steep slopes, normal-sized lawn

Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD 1000

  • 1,000 m²
  • Slope 80%
  • Vision + Network RTK
  • All-wheel drive
  • £1,399 (Mammotion UK store)

An 80% rating is exceptional for a 1,000 m² mower. The LUBA mini 2 AWD drives all its wheels, uses cameras plus network RTK so there is no base station to site on a hillside, and detects rain. It was also the one steep-slope Mammotion in stock at Mammotion UK when we checked. For a typical sloping suburban garden, this is the one to look at first.

What owners praise

  • A holiday-home owner reports near-perfect lawns and likes the geofence and progress alerts (source)
  • Buyers call setup easy and the mower very quiet; one was pleased to get lawn stripes (source)
  • An owner with high walls, many trees and poor signal says navigation copes well (source)

What owners complain about

  • Edges still need occasional trimming (source)
  • One owner with weak home Wi-Fi couldn't do the full setup and used the simpler drop-and-mow mode (source)

Owner feedback comes from reviews on Mammotion's own UK store, which may lean positive.

Skip it if: you need cut-to-the-edge results. Owners say edges still need trimming, and Mammotion's UK page does not state the cutting height range.

Steep and up to 2,000 m²

Sunseeker Elite X5 Gen 2

  • 2,000 m²
  • Slope 60%
  • RTK + vision
  • All-wheel drive
  • £1,899 (UK dealer Red Band)

The Elite X5 Gen 2 is rated for 60% slopes, with each of its three wheels driven independently, which UK dealer Red Band describes as three-wheel AWD. It uses network RTK plus visual mapping with no base station, has a rain sensor, and offers GPS tracking and geofence alerts. The price is from a UK dealer, as Sunseeker's UK page shows none.

Spec note: Cutting height from UK dealer Red Band; Sunseeker UK does not state it.

Skip it if: you want a long track record behind the brand in the UK, or owner reviews to read first. We could not find genuine owner feedback, and the UK page does not state the warranty. Sunseeker also lists an annual subscription renewal.

Large, hilly plots

Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 3000

  • 3,000 m²
  • Slope 80%
  • LiDAR + vision + Network RTK
  • All-wheel drive
  • £2,399 (Mammotion UK store)

For paddocks, orchards and big sloping gardens, the LUBA 3 AWD combines an 80% slope rating with 3,000 m² of capacity, a wide 40 cm cut from twin discs, and LiDAR, vision and network RTK together. UK owners on Mammotion's store describe it handling hilly, tree-dotted plots in wet grass.

Availability: Pre-order at Mammotion UK when checked.

What owners praise

  • UK owners say it handles large, tree-dotted, hilly or uneven plots with ease, including wet grass (source)
  • Reviewers call it well built and quiet; one livery-yard owner says it doesn't bother the horses (source)
  • One owner says it mows more reliably than the Husqvarna it replaced (source)

What owners complain about

  • Some needed support to set up several separate lawns and found the software took time to learn (source)
  • Owners note it is heavy to carry between lawns and needs regular cleaning (source)
  • One owner doubts the plastic-looking cutting discs will survive hidden stones (source)

Owner feedback comes from reviews on Mammotion's own UK store, which may lean positive.

Spec note: Cutting height from TechRadar's review; noise is an upper limit (up to 70 dB).

Skip it if: you need it this week, or the garden is small. It was on pre-order at Mammotion UK when we checked, it is heavy to carry between lawns, and the stated noise is up to 70 dB, the loudest here.

How to Measure Your Slope with a Phone

  1. Lay a straight plank or spirit level about 1 m long down the steepest part of the slope.
  2. Open a free inclinometer or "level" app, or the measure app built into most phones, and rest the phone on the plank.
  3. Read the angle in degrees. Convert to a percentage: the slope percentage is the tangent of the angle × 100. As a guide, 10° ≈ 18%, 15° ≈ 27%, 20° ≈ 36%, 25° ≈ 47%, 30° ≈ 58%, 35° ≈ 70%, 40° ≈ 84%.
  4. Measure near the edges too, where the mower turns. That is where most mowers lose grip first.

Pick a mower rated above your steepest reading, not equal to it. A damp lawn offers less grip than the dry test conditions behind a spec sheet.

Buying Advice for Sloping Gardens

Watch the Edge Rating

A slope that runs into a fence or border is the hardest case, because the mower has to turn on it. Husqvarna is unusually open about this, quoting separate inside and boundary figures. If a brand quotes one number only, ask its support team whether it applies at the edge.

Wet Grass Changes Everything

The RHS warns that mowing very wet soil causes compaction and muddy wheel ruts, and slopes make it worse. A rain sensor, or at least a weather-based pause, matters more on a hill. See our guide to robot mowers in rain.

Satellite Signal on a Hillside

Slopes often come with banks, retaining walls and trees that cut off part of the sky. If you are choosing an RTK model, check coverage first. Our navigation explainer compares the options.

Slope Questions

What does a 45% slope look like?

About 24°: the ground rises 45 cm for every metre you walk across. The phone method above is the quickest way to find your own figure.

Is AWD essential?

Not always. Several mowers rated for 40–45% are two-wheel drive. As a rule of thumb, the steeper and damper your lawn, the more AWD is worth paying for.

Can a robot mower tip over?

Most mowers have lift sensors that stop the blades, and many add tilt sensors; check the manual for yours. Running a mower beyond its rated slope risks slipping, scalping the turf and wear on the drive, so stay within the rating.

See how slope-capable models compare with the rest in our main robot mower guide.
