Who This Guide Is For
This guide is for lawns up to about 500 m². That covers most British homes: the Office for National Statistics puts the median private garden in Great Britain at 188 m², and only part of any garden is lawn. If you have a typical semi or terrace with a back lawn, and perhaps a small front lawn, you are in the right place.
Skip this guide if your lawn is over 800 m², or very steep. The large lawns guide and the slopes guide fit those gardens better. If you have not measured your lawn yet, the lawn-size calculator takes two minutes.
How We Chose
We compared every model in our database rated for at least 200 m² and priced under about £1,000, then looked at what matters most in a small garden:
- Narrow spaces. Small gardens are mostly edges, corners and side passages. Owner feedback on edge cutting counted for a lot.
- Setup effort. On a small lawn, an afternoon pegging a boundary wire is a bigger share of the job than on a big one.
- Price for the area. Paying for 3,000 m² of capacity you will never use makes little sense.
- Neighbours. Gardens are close together, so noise ratings matter more than usual.
Specs are from each manufacturer's UK page where published, otherwise from the retailer or source linked from each model name. We have not tested these mowers ourselves. How we research explains the method.

The Picks
MOVA LiDAX Ultra 800
- 800 m²
- Slope 45%
- LiDAR + vision
- £609 (UK dealer YPC)
The LiDAX Ultra 800 uses a spinning LiDAR sensor plus cameras, so it builds its own map without satellite signal. That matters in small gardens hemmed in by houses and tall fences, where satellite positioning can struggle. It is rated for 800 m², comfortably above most small lawns, and owners describe neat straight lines with an extra pass along the edges. The price we found is from a smaller UK dealer, so check a few retailers.
What owners praise
Owner feedback is from a European retailer (Coolblue).
Spec note: Specs from UK retailer AO.com; MOVA's UK site could not be checked.
Skip it if: you want to buy from MOVA directly. We could not check MOVA's UK site, and the specs here come from UK retailer AO.com. There is also no garage in the box.

- 600 m²
- Slope 40%
- RTK + vision
- £999 (Husqvarna UK store, 'from' price)
Husqvarna sells through UK dealers who can also service its mowers. The Aspire R6V is the cheapest current wire-free Husqvarna we could verify, combining satellite positioning with an AI camera, rated for 600 m². The trade-off is the slope rating at the edge of the lawn, which is only 15%, so a lawn that drops away at the borders is a poor fit.
What owners praise
- UK owner found setup straightforward and the cut consistently clean (source)
What owners complain about
- UK owner's new R6V initially would not cut; phone support and the dealer could not help, and it took about four days via email/tech support to fix (source)
Feedback is from single UK owner reviews on Trustpilot.
Spec note: Slope is 40% inside the lawn and 15% at the boundary.
Skip it if: your lawn slopes at its edges, or you want a long warranty in writing. Husqvarna's product page does not state the warranty length, and one UK owner waited four days for a fix to a new mower that would not cut.
Check Price at Husqvarna UKBosch VISIMOW 18V-200
- 200 m²
- Slope 35%
- Vision
- £523.73 (Bosch UK, kit with battery and charger)
If your lawn is a pocket handkerchief, the VISIMOW 18V-200 is the cheapest wire-free Bosch, and one of the cheapest wire-free mowers we track. It steers by camera and ultrasonic sensors and uses Bosch's 18V garden-tool battery, which helps if you already own Bosch cordless tools. Bosch's UK price for the kit with a battery and charger is the one shown; the bare mower is cheaper if you have a battery already.
Skip it if: your lawn is over 200 m², or you want theft protection. Bosch's page does not list any anti-theft features, and we found no owner reviews yet.
Check Price at Bosch UKGardena SILENO minimo 500
- 500 m²
- Slope 25%
- Boundary wire
- £529 (UK dealer Mincost, sale price)
A boundary wire is old technology, but it works anywhere: no satellites, no cameras, no Wi-Fi. The SILENO minimo is a quiet, compact wired mower from a long-established garden brand, with a corridor-cut mode for passages as narrow as 60 cm, and a 3-year warranty if you register it. Once the wire is down, there is little to go wrong, and it is a sensible choice under heavy tree cover.
Spec note: Slope is 25% inside the lawn and 10% at the boundary. Warranty needs registration within 3 months.
Skip it if: you do not want to lay a wire, or your lawn has any real slope. Its rating is 25% inside the lawn and only 10% at the boundary. Gardena's UK page shows no price; ours is a UK dealer's sale price.

Measure the Grass, Not the Garden
A 15 × 10 m back garden with a patio and borders may only hold 90 m² of lawn. Measure the grass only, then add any front lawn you want the same mower to cut. Rated areas are the manufacturer's maximum, so if your lawn sits close to a model's limit, step up a size.
Check the Narrowest Passage
Many small gardens have a side return or a gap between beds. Measure the narrowest point the mower must pass through and check the manufacturer's figure. Dreame A1 Pro owners, for example, report it refusing gaps that look wide enough on paper.
Think About Where the Dock Goes
The charging station needs mains power, and satellite-guided models need a clear view of the sky around it. In a small, walled garden that rules out some corners. Camera and LiDAR models are less fussy. Our guide to wire vs wire-free explains the difference.
Mow in Daylight Only
Small gardens are exactly where hedgehogs forage. Whatever you buy, schedule it for daytime. Our hedgehog safety guide has the evidence.
Small-Garden Questions
Is a robot mower worth it for a lawn this small?
It depends on what your time is worth and whether you pay a gardener now. On a lawn under 100 m², a push mower takes minutes, so the case is weaker. Our are they worth it guide runs the numbers over five years.
Can one mower do my front and back lawns?
Often, yes, but how varies by brand. Some drive between lawns along a path you draw in the app; others need carrying. See best mowers for front and back gardens.
Do I need Wi-Fi in the garden?
For setup, usually you need a phone near the mower and either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. For everyday running, models with built-in 4G do not rely on your Wi-Fi. Our Wi-Fi and 4G guide covers each type.
What is the quietest small-garden option?
Of the models above that publish a figure, the Gardena SILENO minimo is rated quietest at 57 dB, alongside the MOVA LiDAX Ultra 800. Several brands do not publish noise figures at all.
