Best Robot Mowers for Front and Back Gardens

The classic British layout is a lawn at the front, a lawn at the back, and a narrow side passage between them. Whether one mower can do both depends on how it gets from one to the other.

  3. For split-level or sloping layouts: Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD 1000.
  4. For lawns you will carry it between: Husqvarna Automower Aspire R6V.
  5. Small wired option with 3 areas: Bosch Indego XS 300.

Who This Guide Is For

This guide is for gardens with two or more separate lawns, or one lawn broken up by paths, patios or beds. Before you shortlist, answer one question: can a mower physically drive from one lawn to the other, along a path, drive or side passage? If yes, look for a model that drives between zones. If not, any mower will need carrying, and the question becomes how easily it remembers the second lawn.

Skip this guide if you have a single, simple lawn. Start with small gardens instead.

How We Chose

"Multi-zone" means different things to different brands, so we read what each UK page actually says:

  • Zones on one map. Areas of the same lawn with their own schedules or heights. Nearly every wire-free model does this.
  • Linked lawns. Separate lawns joined by a route the mower drives along, across a path or drive.
  • Separate maps. Lawns the mower cannot drive between, saved as their own maps so you can carry it over and press go.

Then we checked the narrowest passage each mower can manage where a brand states it, and what owners say about getting between lawns in practice. Remember that the combined lawn area must be within the mower's rating. Add both lawns in the lawn-size calculator.

The Picks

Linked front and back lawns

eufy E15

  • 800 m²
  • Slope 40%
  • Vision
  • £1,499 (Anker UK store)

eufy's Multi-Zone Pathway lets the E15 drive between lawns up to 60 m apart, which covers the walk from back garden to front on most houses. It navigates by camera, with no wire or RTK station to position, and can be tracked over 4G if your Wi-Fi does not reach the front. Owners like the automatic mapping, and one says it drives around their dog and trees.

What owners praise

  • Owners say setup is quick, with one reporting about 10 minutes (source)
  • Buyers like the automatic mapping and app scheduling, and one says it drives around their dog and trees (source)

What owners complain about

  • Owners report grass building up under the deck and jamming the blades, especially in damp conditions, so the blades need cleaning (source)
  • Some buyers find it pricey and heavy to lift (about 12.75 kg) (source)

Owner feedback is from a European retailer (Coolblue).

Spec note: eufy states the slope as both 40% and 18° (about 32%). Cut height, width and noise from eufy's US page. eufy says it returns home in rain, but does not name a rain sensor.

Skip it if: your lawns are not joined by a route it can drive. eufy says each base station supports one map. Owners also report grass building up under the deck in damp weather.

Most zones for the money

MOVA LiDAX Ultra 800

  • 800 m²
  • Slope 45%
  • LiDAR + vision
  • £609 (UK dealer YPC)

Up to 150 zones, each with its own settings, is far more than most gardens will ever need, but it means beds, borders and separate patches can each be handled their own way. One owner says it crosses a gravel path to reach other zones on its own. LiDAR navigation also copes well in the shaded side passages that trouble satellite-guided mowers.

What owners praise

  • Owners say it mows in neat straight lines, then makes an extra pass along the edges for a clean finish (source)
  • Buyers found setup easy, liked how much the app lets them configure (zones, no-go areas), and say it crosses a gravel path to reach other zones (source)

What owners complain about

  • Owners note there is no garage included in the box (source)
  • The base station needs Wi-Fi coverage during setup (source)

Owner feedback is from a European retailer (Coolblue).

Spec note: Specs from UK retailer AO.com; MOVA's UK site could not be checked.

Skip it if: the base station would sit out of Wi-Fi range. Owners say it needs Wi-Fi coverage at the base during setup, and the price we found is from a smaller UK dealer.

Split-level or sloping layouts

Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD 1000

  • 1,000 m²
  • Slope 80%
  • Vision + Network RTK
  • All-wheel drive
  • £1,399 (Mammotion UK store)

Gardens with an upper and lower lawn, joined by a ramp or bank, need grip as well as zone handling. The LUBA mini 2 AWD supports up to 10 separate zones and is rated for 80% slopes with all-wheel drive. It uses network RTK and cameras, so there is no aerial to place.

What owners praise

  • A holiday-home owner reports near-perfect lawns and likes the geofence and progress alerts (source)
  • Buyers call setup easy and the mower very quiet; one was pleased to get lawn stripes (source)

What owners complain about

  • Edges still need occasional trimming (source)
  • One owner with weak home Wi-Fi couldn't do the full setup and used the simpler drop-and-mow mode (source)

Owner feedback comes from reviews on Mammotion's own UK store, which may lean positive.

Skip it if: your lawns are joined only by steps. No mower here climbs steps, so you would be carrying it, and Mammotion does not state the cutting height range on its UK page.

Lawns you will carry it between

Husqvarna Automower Aspire R6V

  • 600 m²
  • Slope 40%
  • RTK + vision
  • £999 (Husqvarna UK store, 'from' price)

When lawns cannot be joined at all, Husqvarna's Secondary Work Area is built for it: Husqvarna designed it for lawn sections not connected by a passage: you carry the mower over and start it there. You can also set separate work areas and temporary stay-out zones on the main lawn. Rated for 600 m², combined.

What owners praise

  • UK owner found setup straightforward and the cut consistently clean (source)

What owners complain about

  • UK owner's new R6V initially would not cut; phone support and the dealer could not help, and it took about four days via email/tech support to fix (source)

Feedback is from single UK owner reviews on Trustpilot.

Spec note: Slope is 40% inside the lawn and 15% at the boundary.

Skip it if: you want it to manage the move on its own. The secondary area needs carrying, and the edge slope rating is only 15%.

Small wired option with 3 areas

Bosch Indego XS 300

  • 300 m²
  • Slope 27%
  • Boundary wire
  • £813 (Bosch UK product page)

Bosch's MultiArea stores up to three lawn areas, with a combined limit of 300 m², on a dependable boundary-wire system. For a small front and back lawn under trees or tall walls, where wire-free navigation struggles, that is a sensible fit. Wickes listed it in stock below Bosch's UK price when we checked.

Availability: No longer on Bosch UK's main mower range page; in stock at Wickes when checked.

Spec note: Navigation inferred from the boundary wire supplied in the box.

Skip it if: you do not want to lay a wire, or your lawns add up to more than 300 m². It has dropped off Bosch's main UK mower range page, so it may be winding down.

Buying Advice for Multi-Zone Gardens

Measure the Side Passage

The passage is usually the problem, not the lawns. Measure its narrowest point, including any bins or gates, and check it against the brand's minimum. Ecovacs, for example, quotes 0.8 m for the O1200 and Gardena 60 cm for the SILENO minimo.

Hard Surfaces and Gravel

Where a brand supports transport paths, a smooth, level path is usually the easy part. Gravel, steps and kerbs are different. Owners of one MOVA say it crosses gravel; owners of the eufy E18 report problems with ditches and steep strips near the kerb. Ask the brand if in doubt.

Front Gardens Are More Exposed

A mower working in an open front garden is easier to steal. GPS tracking, a geofence alarm and a PIN all help. See our theft and security guide.

Setting Up Transport Paths

On Husqvarna's EPOS models you draw transport paths in the app; on other brands you drive the mower along the route once. Our setup guide walks through mapping.

Multi-Zone Questions

Do I need two charging stations?

Usually not. Most mowers return to one dock. eufy says each base station supports one map, so lawns too far apart for its pathway would need separate setups.

Can a mower cross a driveway?

Many wire-free mowers can, if you draw a route across it. One eufy E18 owner says theirs reliably crosses a driveway on schedule. Never route a mower across a public pavement.

How do wired mowers handle two lawns?

With a guide wire running between them, or a separate wire loop that the mower is carried to. Bosch's MultiArea and Gardena's guide wire both do this.
