Robot Mower Theft: UK Security Features Compared

A robot mower is an expensive gadget left outside on its own. The good news is that most have a PIN or account lock, and several can be tracked.

Short answer: pick a mower with a PIN lock and a lift alarm as the minimum, and GPS tracking if it works in a front garden or on an open plot. Then mark it, register it, and tell your insurer.

The Layers of Protection

PIN and Account Lock

A PIN stops anyone starting or reconfiguring the mower. Husqvarna Automowers need a four-digit PIN to operate and are paired to their own charging station. Mammotion ties each mower to the first account that activates it, so it cannot be reactivated without that login, and a Lost Mode locks it completely.

Lift and Geofence Alarms

A lift alarm sounds if someone picks the mower up. On Husqvarna models it sounds immediately on lifting, or if STOP is pressed and the PIN not entered within 30 seconds. Navimow's geofence alert sounds a loud siren if the mower leaves an adjustable zone of 10–50 m around the lawn, and only the owner's PIN silences it.

GPS Tracking

Tracking lets you see where the mower is if it is taken. It needs a mobile data connection, so it only works away from home on models with built-in 4G or a 4G module. Navimow notes that models without built-in 4G need its Access+ module to report location beyond your Wi-Fi. Husqvarna includes GPS and a GeoFence on its X-line models; on most others it needs the Automower Connect accessory.

Figures are from the manufacturer's UK page where published, otherwise from the retailer or source linked from the model name, checked 28 October 2026. "Not stated" means we found no published figure. Prices are the brand's UK price unless labelled otherwise, and retailers' prices change often.

"Not stated" means the UK product page does not list anti-theft features, not necessarily that there are none. MOVA ViAX 300 owners say anti-theft needs an extra module.

Practical Steps

  1. Turn everything on. Some protection has to be switched on, such as Navimow's lift alarm. Set the PIN and alarms up during installation.
  2. Mark and register it. Worcester City Council's community-safety advice is to mark garden equipment with your postcode using a UV pen, record serial numbers, and register items free on Immobilise, the register UK police use to reunite owners with recovered property.
  3. Tell your insurer. Which? found about 91% of home insurance policies cover theft of items kept outside and in outbuildings, but some require proof of forced entry, and items worth more than about £1,000–£2,000, including robot mowers, may need to be declared individually.
  4. Light the garden. Immobilise recommends motion-triggered floodlights, and cites Aviva claims data showing garden and outbuilding thefts rise by over a quarter when the clocks go forward.
  5. Store it indoors over winter. It is safer from theft and from frost. See our winter storage guide.

Front Gardens and Open Plots

A mower working in a back garden behind a locked gate is a much smaller risk than one in an open front garden or a field. If yours will work out of sight, GPS tracking and a geofence alarm are worth paying for. Our front and back garden guide and large lawns guide favour models with both. Tracking relies on data, so check our Wi-Fi and 4G guide for what each brand includes.
