Best Wire-Free Robot Mowers

Wire-free mowers skip the afternoon of pegging cable round the lawn. The catch is that each navigation type has a weak spot, and the right one depends on your trees, walls and signal.

  5. Premium, with dealer support: Husqvarna Automower 310E NERA.

Who This Guide Is For

This is for anyone who wants a robot mower without burying a cable round the lawn. Boundary-wire mowers still held the largest UK share in 2025, according to market analysts Mordor Intelligence, but camera-guided mowers are forecast to grow fastest.

Skip wire-free if your lawn sits under dense tree canopy and you are on a tight budget. A wired mower is still the most predictable option there. Our wire vs wire-free guide sets out when each makes sense.

How We Chose

"Wire-free" covers three different technologies, and each fails in a different place:

  • RTK satellite positioning is accurate to a few centimetres on open lawns, but accuracy can drop next to tall buildings and under large trees.
  • Camera (vision) navigation needs no base station or signal, but can struggle in poor light, strong shadow or where the lawn edge is unclear.
  • LiDAR maps walls, trees and fences with a laser, which works under trees, but an open lawn with no features gives it fewer reference points.

So we picked one strong option for each type of garden, rather than one "winner". Within each, we weighed area rating, slope rating, price, warranty and the complaints owners raise most often. Most of the newer models combine two of these technologies, which covers some of the gaps. Our navigation explainer goes deeper.

Figures are from the manufacturer's UK page where published, otherwise from the retailer or source linked from the model name, checked 28 October 2026. "Not stated" means we found no published figure. Prices are the brand's UK price unless labelled otherwise, and retailers' prices change often.

The Picks

For gardens full of trees

Dreame A1 Pro

  • 2,000 m²
  • Slope 45%
  • LiDAR
  • £999 (Dreame UK store)

The A1 Pro steers by 3D LiDAR, building its own map from the walls, fences and trunks around it. Under a canopy that would upset a satellite-guided mower, that is a real advantage. It is rated for 2,000 m², a lot of capacity at its price, and Dreame states a rain sensor and a 3-year warranty.

Availability: Sold out at the Dreame UK store; in stock at UK retailer Eco Wizard when checked.

What owners praise

  • Buyers say setup is quick and the app walks you through it step by step, with no perimeter wire needed (source)
  • Owners report a neat cut and fine clippings, with quieter running than they expected (source)

What owners complain about

  • One owner says it covers only about 100 m² per charge, and that the 2,000 m² figure applies only to Efficient mode (source)
  • Several owners found adding and editing multiple zones frustrating, with zones that can't be resized and slow support (source)

Owner feedback is from Dutch and Australian review sites; we found no UK owner reviews yet.

Spec note: Slope and cutting height from UK retailer Eco Wizard; Dreame UK does not state them.

Skip it if: your lawn is a wide open rectangle with nothing around it, or you need many zones. Owners say editing multiple zones is frustrating, and one says the rated area is only reached in its fastest mode.

Simplest setup

eufy E15

  • 800 m²
  • Slope 40%
  • Vision
  • £1,499 (Anker UK store)

The E15 navigates by camera alone. There is no wire, no aerial and no network RTK subscription to think about, and one owner reports setting it up in about ten minutes. It returns home in rain or low light, and it can link lawns up to 60 m apart. A 4G data plan is available in the app if Wi-Fi does not reach the whole garden.

What owners praise

  • Owners say setup is quick, with one reporting about 10 minutes (source)
  • Buyers like the automatic mapping and app scheduling, and one says it drives around their dog and trees (source)

What owners complain about

  • Owners report grass building up under the deck and jamming the blades, especially in damp conditions, so the blades need cleaning (source)
  • Some buyers find it pricey and heavy to lift (about 12.75 kg) (source)

Owner feedback is from a European retailer (Coolblue).

Spec note: eufy states the slope as both 40% and 18° (about 32%). Cut height, width and noise from eufy's US page. eufy says it returns home in rain, but does not name a rain sensor.

Skip it if: your lawn has poorly defined edges, deep shade or heavy overhanging plants. Camera navigation is sensitive to lighting and unclear borders, and owners report grass building up under the deck in damp conditions.

For uneven or sloping ground

Mammotion LUBA mini 2 AWD 1000

  • 1,000 m²
  • Slope 80%
  • Vision + Network RTK
  • All-wheel drive
  • £1,399 (Mammotion UK store)

Mammotion rates the LUBA mini 2 AWD for slopes up to 80%, far above most mowers here, and it pairs cameras with network RTK, so there is no base station to install. It supports up to 10 separate zones, which suits split or tiered gardens. It was in stock at Mammotion UK when we checked, unlike several of its siblings.

What owners praise

  • A holiday-home owner reports near-perfect lawns and likes the geofence and progress alerts (source)
  • Buyers call setup easy and the mower very quiet; one was pleased to get lawn stripes (source)

What owners complain about

  • Edges still need occasional trimming (source)
  • One owner with weak home Wi-Fi couldn't do the full setup and used the simpler drop-and-mow mode (source)

Owner feedback comes from reviews on Mammotion's own UK store, which may lean positive.

Skip it if: you need neat edges without strimming. Owners say edges still need occasional trimming, and one with weak home Wi-Fi had to fall back to a simpler setup mode.

Husqvarna Automower 310E NERA

  • 1,500 m²
  • Slope 30%
  • EPOS (RTK)
  • £2,249 (Husqvarna UK store, 'from' price)

Husqvarna's EPOS system offers 2–3 cm positioning and can use either Husqvarna's own cloud service or a local reference station. The 310E NERA can also mix virtual boundaries with physical wire in the awkward bits, which no other model here offers. It has a PIN, alarm and geofence for theft, and Husqvarna's UK dealers can install and service it.

Spec note: Slope is 30% inside the lawn and 20% at the boundary. Check whether the EPOS plug-in is included at the listed price.

Skip it if: you are cost-conscious or your lawn slopes. It is the most expensive mower in this guide, its slope rating is 30% inside the lawn and 20% at the boundary, and Husqvarna does not state the warranty length on the product page.

Buying Advice for Wire-Free Mowers

Check Your Signal Before You Buy

Satellite-guided mowers need a clear view of the sky over the whole lawn. Husqvarna warns that tall buildings and dense trees can block signals. Navimow lets you check network RTK coverage by postcode. If your lawn is overshadowed, lean towards LiDAR or camera models.

Know What the 4G Costs

Built-in 4G keeps a mower trackable away from your Wi-Fi, but terms vary. Mammotion's UK guide lists free data for one to three years, then paid plans; a later report says Mammotion made it free for life on compatible models. Check the brand's current terms. Our Wi-Fi and 4G guide covers each brand.

Budget an Hour for Mapping

"Ready in minutes" is a manufacturer claim. Several owners across brands say automatic mapping only partly worked, and they redrew borders by driving the mower round the edge with their phone. Our setup guide walks through it.

Wire-Free Questions

Are wire-free mowers as accurate as wired ones?

On open lawns with good signal, satellite systems are accurate to a few centimetres. A wire is more predictable in hard places, such as deep shade. Owners of several wire-free models say edges still need occasional trimming.

What happens if the internet goes down?

Most mowers carry on with their stored map and schedule. Network RTK models need data for their position corrections, so an outage can pause them. Ask the brand how its model behaves offline.

Can I add a wire later if the mower struggles in one spot?

Only some models allow this. Husqvarna's NERA range can mix virtual boundaries and physical wire. Most other wire-free mowers cannot use a wire at all.
