Will a Robot Mower Work with My Wi-Fi or 4G?

Garden Wi-Fi is often patchy, and that worries a lot of buyers. In practice, a mower needs a connection for three different jobs, and most can manage without Wi-Fi for at least two of them.

Short answer: if your Wi-Fi does not reach the whole lawn, choose a model with built-in 4G, or one that runs happily on its stored map. Check network RTK coverage by postcode if the mower relies on it.

The Three Jobs a Connection Does

1. Setup

Most mowers pair with your phone over Bluetooth while you stand next to them. Navimow, for example, asks for the phone to be within about 3 m during setup. Some setups also need Wi-Fi at the charging station: MOVA owners say the base needs Wi-Fi coverage during setup.

2. App Control and Alerts

Changing a schedule from the sofa, or getting an alert when the mower is stuck, needs an internet connection: your Wi-Fi or the mower's own 4G. Navimow notes that its mowers need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; 5 GHz is not supported. Many routers broadcast both, so check that the 2.4 GHz band is switched on.

3. Positioning (Network RTK Models Only)

Mowers that use network RTK get their satellite corrections over the internet, so they need data across the lawn. Navimow says access and data are included free on its X4, i2 AWD, H2 and X3 series, and lets you check coverage by postcode. Husqvarna's cloud option is available in the UK as an alternative to a local reference station, and its Wi-Fi-only models need stable Wi-Fi across the work area.

Figures are from the manufacturer's UK page where published, otherwise from the retailer or source linked from the model name, checked 28 October 2026. "Not stated" means we found no published figure. Prices are the brand's UK price unless labelled otherwise, and retailers' prices change often.

What 4G Costs After the Free Period

Built-in 4G usually comes with a free data period. Terms change often, so check before you buy:

  • Mammotion: its UK 4G guide says mowers sold from 5 January 2026 include one or three years of data depending on the model, then plans cost £19.90 for three months or £49.90 for twelve. In April 2026, Notebookcheck reported that Mammotion had made 4G and its iNavi network RTK free for life on compatible models, including the LUBA 3 AWD, LUBA mini AWD and YUKA mini. The UK guide may not yet reflect that, so confirm with Mammotion.
  • Navimow: network RTK and its data are included on the series listed above. 4G as an internet connection needs an active service plan.
  • eufy: the E15 runs over Wi-Fi, with a 4G data subscription available in the app if Wi-Fi does not cover the garden.
  • Add-on modules: some models need a separate 4G module. One YUKA mini 2 owner says theirs cost about £99 extra.

How to Check Your Garden

  1. Stand where the charging station will go and at the far end of the lawn. Run a speed test on your phone's Wi-Fi at each.
  2. If Wi-Fi drops out, check the mower's 4G option, or plan a mesh Wi-Fi point or outdoor access point near the lawn.
  3. For network RTK models, enter your postcode in the brand's coverage checker before buying.
  4. If you have neither good Wi-Fi nor mobile signal, ask the brand whether the mower can be set up and run over Bluetooth alone. Some boundary-wire mowers, such as Gardena's SILENO minimo, connect by Bluetooth only.

Connectivity also matters for tracking a stolen mower. See theft and security, and our navigation explainer for which systems depend on a connection.
