Robot Mower Winter Storage and Maintenance

Once growth stops in autumn, a robot mower is best stored indoors until spring. Doing it properly protects the battery, a costly part to replace: Navimow estimates 20–25% of the mower's price.

The checklist: clean it, charge it, switch it off, and store it somewhere dry and frost-free. Leave any RTK aerial where it is. Check your own brand's manual for its charge level and temperature range.

When to Put It Away

When growth slows in October and the lawn needs cutting only now and then, it is time. The RHS says hedgehogs hibernate from about October or November until March or April, and in mild winters lawns may still benefit from an occasional cut. If you keep the mower out longer, set it for daylight hours only and stop it in frost.

Step by Step

  1. Clean it. Husqvarna recommends cleaning the body, chassis and blade disc. Navimow says to use a normal hose rather than a pressure washer; Mammotion says to use a soft brush and low-pressure water on the LUBA 3 AWD, never a pressure washer, and to let the mower dry for at least 30 minutes before storing it.
  2. Fit new blades and screws, as Husqvarna suggests, so it is ready for spring.
  3. Check the charging contacts for corrosion.
  4. Charge it to the level your brand asks for, then switch it off or put it into hibernation mode.
  5. Store it indoors, on its wheels or a wall hanger, in a garage, utility room or shed that stays frost-free. Indoors is also safer from theft.
  6. Deal with the dock. If you bring the charging station in, mark its spot with pegs so it goes back exactly where it was. Boundary wires stay in the ground.
  7. Leave the RTK aerial alone. Moving it means re-mapping in spring. See our RTK base station guide.

In Spring

Husqvarna recommends a dealer service before the new season, covering firmware, the battery and safety checks. For other brands, put the dock back, update the firmware, and start with the highest cutting height. Our mowing calendar covers the first cuts, and battery and blade life explains why storage charge matters.
