How Long Do Robot Mowers Last?

A robot mower is a machine that works most days for most of the year, so parts wear. The good news is that the parts that wear are the cheap or replaceable ones.

Rule of thumb from the manufacturers: blades every few weeks to three months, the battery every few years, and the motor and body for many seasons with an annual check-up.

Figures are each manufacturer's own, for its own mowers. They are not directly comparable between brands.

Blades

Robot mowers use small, light blades and replace them rather than sharpen them. Navimow specifically recommends replacing over sharpening. Signs of wear are a ragged cut, extra noise or vibration, and the battery draining faster than usual. Husqvarna adds that the screws should be changed with every blade change, and old and new blades should not be mixed.

Navimow also warns that wet blades tear grass rather than cut it. See robot mowers in rain.

Battery

Husqvarna says signs of an ageing battery include the mower returning to charge more often, and stopping on the lawn with a flat battery. Navimow estimates a replacement battery costs around 20–25% of the mower's price.

To make it last, Husqvarna recommends:

  • keeping the charging station in the shade;
  • replacing blades regularly, because blunt blades make the motor work harder;
  • storing the mower fully charged in a dry, frost-free place over winter.

Our winter storage guide has each brand's storage advice. Note that warranties often cover the battery for less time than the mower: Ecovacs UK, for example, gives three years on the mower and two on the battery.

Annual Service

Husqvarna recommends a dealer service each year before the new season, covering maintenance, firmware updates, battery testing and safety checks. Not every brand has a dealer network, so for many mowers this is a do-it-yourself job: clean it, change the blades, check the charging contacts, update the firmware.

What This Means for Running Costs

Over five years, expect to buy blades several times a season and probably one battery. Our five-year cost comparison includes a battery replacement at Navimow's estimate. Warranty length also matters, and is two or three years from the manufacturers we track:
